I am not one to make resolutions for the New Year. I have always found that resolutions are weak, short sighted assertions that reach only a modicum of the hidden potential inside us all. I believe in setting goals. Not just hopes and dreams but specific, measurable, attainable, reasonable, and timely sets of actions that will improve my life. I am also a strong believer in reflection. Looking backwards often enough gives greater inside on how to move forward. In order to establish a baseline for my goals this year I want to look at where I came from.

2017 REWIND:

In March of 2017, Tales From The Red Pen was established in an attempt to make money. As of January 1st, Red Pen Tales hasn’t made a penny. So much for using my writing as an attempt to pay off debt! However, I love it! For me, it has become a weekly form of therapy.

Speaking of Debt:

Financially speaking, being a teacher and living in this town sucks! There is so much to see and do, but I am limited by how much I can afford. We have received pay raises, but they are never adjusted for the cost of living.  Increases in health insurance premiums void any pay raises.

Speaking of Health:

I am happy to say that I do have my health. However, my diet is not very good. I have not been very faithful in maintaining the healthiest of diets. I attempted a modified Paleo diet, where I saw some good results. That diet was very pliable but can become very expensive. It is also difficult to maintain unless you make enough food and cart it around with you all day. Being a teacher, it is so much easier to drive to McDonald’s or eat some cafeteria food.

Speaking of Careers:

The best part of my job is working with children and watching them grow. The worst part of my job is dealing with the never ending drama of middle school. You would think I would be referring to the students, but I am referring mainly to the adults. If it wasn’t for the adults, teaching would be a great profession. I know I am not the most positive human being in the world either. I tend to believe that people more often than no,t show a pension for the darker angels of their nature, rather than the better parts of their humanity. I could go on a rant here but the job is beginning to wear on me. I can only deal with so much repetition in my life. Teaching the same subject matter, the same way, to the same kids every day for 36 weeks is getting old. A change is greatly needed.


Goal 1: Career

I will have a new job by the end of the summer. I am going to work my ass off to obtain an administrative position. I will also be striving to get out of the position that I am in. This could be moving to a new school or teaching a different subject, or even a move to teaching high school. I am also considering a move to the private sector. Bottom line, Red Pen will have a new job! The grass is never greener, but it always has a different view.

Goal 2: Finances:

Complete financial solvency within the year would take a windfall of money that only a lottery ticket could provide. Oh, I am going to play. I believe in the long shots just as much as I believe in practicality. It is my goal to have my credit cards paid off by the end of the year. How? I plan on using the debt snowball. Paying off the lowest card first and working my way up. Income tax returns will give me a nice financial jump start as well. I will work on monetizing my blog in order to make a little extra money on the side. This will take a great deal of organization and time, but, It will be a long time coming. Readers, this is where you come in. I will need your help in order to do this. If you see any advertising on this site, you will know what to do. Click, click, click!

Goal 3: Health

In my twenties, I benched 265lbs. I was strong and fit, and I let myself go. I ballooned up to over 210lbs. I then moved Austin and within a year I was down to 175. Then, I ballooned up again. I am hovering at about 190. I would love to get back down to 165, but yet I also want to gain strength and muscle. Therefore, I am going to focus more on strength. Strength training burns more than regular cardio. Therefore, I will begin a new work out routine and switch it up after the prescribed amount of weeks. I want to be able to bench 265 again, as well as squat and dead-lift 300 lbs. In order to maintain a healthy body, diet will be 90% of the effort. Therefore, I will go on a stricter, no blurred lines, Paleo-Diet.  Its closer to what I already eat, but I will allow one cheat day where I get to eat whatever I want. BURGER KING BABY!

Hey wait a minute, I thought this was a funny teacher story blog? What happened to all the stories?  Well, if I don’t solidify these goals in writing and make them public, then no one can hold me to it!? Every three months I will have a check in with you about how I am doing on my goals. I need your help guys. Keep me honest and on the right path to GOALS 2018!
